Taiwan Update + Summer Season

Wow, has it already been a month since I last posted? Sigh… Well anyway.

Life’s been good here in Taipei. I’ve been busy with classes (I’m trying to improve my horrible Chinese), and, erm, hanging out with classmates. From here on out, I’ll be posting on the ACG events I attend while here in Taipei. You can also look at the “Taipei 2011″ page which should be up shortly.

Erm, yeah. Also the new season started. Here’s what I’ve been following so far:

Wait, that's not a bird...

Ikoku Meiro no Croisée: This is a show about a Japanese girl in Paris during the 19th century. A friend suggested I watch this under the pretense that it was like Aria… and it’s not. Or at least, it’s not Aria quality. The first episode was especially confusing because everybody sounds like they’re talking in Japanese, but apparently they were actually all talking in French, so the whole “oh so you could speak French after all” thing failed. Also, even though I don’t know much about 19th century France, I feel like the show is still failing on historical accuracy.

I read some Narutaru a few weeks back... need to finish it some time.

Kamisama Dolls: Just picked this up yesterday, actually. It seems interesting enough, though the plot still hasn’t fully developed. I’ll probably stay with this show for a bit.

Yes, they did that.

Kamisama no Memo-chou: This is like a modern-day Gosick, except that I’m actually enjoying it. Hopefully it stays that way.

Survival Strategy! Aww~

Mawaru no Penguindrum: This show reminds me so much of Utena in ways that Star Driver didn’t. And not understanding crap in the beginning is one of those ways. It’s still entertaining though.

It's too easy to yaoi-ify this show.

No.6: This show, on the other hand, reminds me of Fractale. The time skip between Eps 1 and 2 could have been pulled off better, but I guess what happened was okay too.

If Gundam 00 were like this, it would have been a lot better.

THE iDOLM@STER: …I’m not enjoying this as much as I was expecting. I’ll probably continue watching it, so I can try to fathom what the big deal behind this whole iDOLM@STER thing is. (It does have it’s own category on NND, so it’s got to be big.)

And again!

Usagi Drop: This and Penguindrum are probably my favorites so far. Rin is adorable, and a potentially good story has been set up already. (Was going to link this, but couldn’t pass up Rin with penguinhat-sama.)

I’m also continuing with Ao no Exorcist, Hanasaku Iroha, Nichijou, Steins;Gate, and Tiger & Bunny. I did complain about the pacing last time I wrote about Steins;Gate, but since then all it’s done is get better.

Besides anime, I’ve been progressing through ef, which I am loving. Chihiro’s arc was quite nice, and Mizuki’s arc has shown me the appeal of genki girls (to a certain extent). It’s interesting to compare what I remember from the anime to the visual novel. I do appreciate some of the artistic decisions that SHAFT did, now that I’ve gotten around to playing the original, though some things are different from what I remember. I should rewatch the anime when I get the chance. I’ve also picked up the Fate/Zero light novels in anticipation for the anime this fall. I’ve read up to the middle of volume 2, and it’s been epic so far, though, I do want to finish ef before continuing.

As a sidenote,  I actually haven’t read any aniblogs since at least April, so I’ve got this 3+ month backlog now. I may never get around to reading them… Well whatever. Taiwan posts are coming!

  1. I’ve been loving Steins;Gate lately! I saw a promo for Usagi Drop, and I’ll probably catch a few episodes of that too.

    • Usagi Drop is quite nice, and I’ve heard good things from the manga (rated 8.7 on Baka-Updates), so I have high hopes for the show.

  2. Haha, just go gradually with the reading – read all of one blog’s posts for one day, and the next day, read all of another blog’s, as well as the first blog if they’ve posted anything else, and repeat…

Mandarin or Cantonese? I can probably guess cause you’re in Taiwan though :v

Sigh… you’re lucky you have decent Internet, the internet I had in China was charged by the hour and ran Windows 2000 :|

    • Maybe I should first trim my list… I’ve got 100+ blogs to cover (maybe it’s 200 already…).
My current strategy has been something like this: read all the blogs that only have 1 new post, then do all the ones with 2, and so on.

Mandarin, of course. I don’t think there are that many Cantonese speakers in Taiwan. =/

Ouch, was at an internet cafe? Sounds painful >_<

      • No, my grandparents’ house. Which was still charged by the hour and ran Windows 2000 because they aren’t technical people :v

I thought most Cantonese people lived in Taiwan, and the majority of mainlanders were Mandarin? :v

And yeah, that’s also what I’m doing – after finishing reading a blog, see if it’s still worth reading. That said, thanks for giving me two readers who clicked on your google reader blogroll and got to me because I posted at that time :v

        • Ah, I see. Interesting how they still pay by the hour for internet, I’ve never seen that for a home internet connection. I guess things are different in China. Also computers are probably really expensive compared to living costs in China, which might explain the Windows 2000 thing.

My impression was that there were a lot of Cantonese in Hong Kong and the mainland, and less in Taiwan? =/
          (Wikipedia solves everything: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cantonese)

Wow, I’m surprised people actually clicked on my blogroll. I really need to make that an actual list of links instead of just a link to my outdated and disorganized Google Reader >_>
Maybe something that would be cool is a blogroll with some preview posts… I wonder how I could pull that off (besides 100 RSS feed widgets in the sidebar >_>)
